General Anesthesia: Enjoy Dental Care in a Relaxed, Unconscious State
Are you undergoing complex dental procedures like the placement of multiple implants? General anesthesia in El Segundo, California, allows you to sleep comfortably through your treatment while we work on you. Imagine sleeping through your treatment and waking up to a brand-new smile! Explore the possibilities of general anesthesia at Beachside Smiles.
What is general anesthesia?
When undergoing a simple procedure like tooth filling or dental crown treatment, the dentist uses local anesthesia to ensure a painless experience. Local anesthetics numb the treatment area, so you remain awake throughout the procedure.
General anesthesia (GA) is needed when local anesthetics are deemed insufficient. The procedure involves administering anesthetic medication through a vein in your hand. Unlike local anesthetics, GA puts you in a relaxed, unconscious state throughout your procedure.
Typically, we keep the anesthesia at a level where breathing remains unassisted. However, deeper anesthesia may slow or suppress breathing. In such cases, a breathing tube or laryngeal mask airway (LMA) supports breathing with a ventilator. All your vital signs (breathing, pulse rate, blood pressure, etc.) are continuously monitored to optimize safety.
Who needs general anesthesia?
Not everyone needs general anesthesia. However, this deep-level sedation may be necessary in the following scenarios.
- Extreme dental fear: Some patients experience intense fear or anxiety about dental procedures, making it difficult or impossible to receive treatment under local anesthesia or conscious sedation. Under general anesthesia, the patient is fully unconscious. This ensures patients with strong gag reflex or severe dental phobia receive the necessary dental work.
- Certain medical conditions: General anesthesia may be necessary for patients with medical conditions that make standard dental treatment difficult. For example, developmental disorders such as autism or cerebral palsy can make it difficult to remain still for long periods. General anesthesia is also beneficial for patients with cognitive conditions like Alzheimer’s or dementia, who may struggle to understand or cooperate during dental treatments.
- Complex/lengthy dental procedures: GA may be a rite of passage for some patients because of the nature of treatment. Extensive dental treatments like surgical extractions or multiple implant placement require extended periods in the chair. These procedures can be uncomfortable or impractical under local anesthesia alone.
What happens when I wake up?
After your treatment, you’ll be taken to a recovery room for observation until you wake up. We’ll continue monitoring your vital signs until you recover your consciousness. It’s normal if there’s fabric dressing or some blood after oral surgery.
Our doctor will brief you on how the procedure went. We’ll also give you post-op instructions to ensure a seamless recovery at home. After an hour, you’ll be ready to leave, but you must have someone drive you home.
Is general anesthesia safe?
The idea of sleeping through your dental procedure is scary. However, we assure you general anesthesia is completely safe when administered by qualified personnel. We follow strict anesthesia protocols to optimize your safety and minimize side effects.
We’ll scrutinize your health during the initial consultation to determine your suitability for general anesthesia. We’ll review your medical history, current medications, past reactions to anesthesia, etc. This information helps us tailor the safest anesthesia approach for your individual needs.
